The history and current uses of Forest Fire Lookouts in Idaho. Some are still used to fight fires, many are in disrepair, and several have been restored as rentals for the public. More than 8,000 forest fire lookouts once dotted the nation's mountaintops, and Idaho boasted nearly a thousand. Today they protect our forests while providing opportunities to experience heritage, beauty, and solitude.
