On August 10, 1927, President Calvin Coolidge rode a horse to the 1927 Mount Rushmore site dedication. Coolidge spoke at the event and presented sculptor Gutzon Borglum with an armload of steel drill bits, officially launching the start of the excavation and carving of the monument.
